Grade 1 Visual Arts

Artistic development at ACS is guided by the National Core Arts Standards. In the Elementary division, these standards are taught in Drama and Dance, Music, and Visual Arts (Art) classes. The standards are divided into 4 key areas: Creating, Performing/Presenting/Producing, Responding, and Connecting

Unit Sketch

This unit will be a grades 1-5 collaborative project focused around the four core values of ACS.

Enduring Understandings

Students will understand...

  • The basic color theory in art such primary and secondary colors, as well as color values (tint, shade, and tone)

  • How to mix colors as well as grasp the subtle variations in color tones

  • How to add either white, black or grey to lighten, darken or mute a color.

  • The "See- Think- Wonder- Change" practice

Skills

Students will be able to...

  • Use the painting tools correctly and safely

  • Critique

  • Mix colors properly using acrylic paint

  • Identify the difference between colors and begin to grasp the ingredients in each color.

Painting

This unit focuses on painting skills, techniques, art history, style, movement, and experimentation.

Students will understand...

  • What goes into an actual painting and the history behind some of the famous works.

  • Museums, Art Exhibits, Curators: what goes into displaying a collection.

  • Styles and periods in the Art movement.

  • The science behind COLOR THEORY.

Skills

Students will be able to...

  • Analyze and critique famous works of art

  • Identify the difference in various Artistic styles and movements

  • Look deeper into a painting for the story without words

  • Either paint a reproduction or follow in the same style of a famous painter

  • Give an informal presentation before the class

  • Present some history about their painting and the artist and movement

Building

This unit focuses on 3D composition: Design, Problem solve, Build, Decorate

Enduring Understandings

Students will understand...

  • The difference between 2D and 3D.

  • The challenges, problem solving and differences between drawing and building.

  • That people from different places and times have made art for a variety of reasons.

Skills

Students will be able to...

Balance/construct/sculpt/build a 3D object out of clay, found materials and paper mache' following learned techniques

Build a 3D sculpture out of various materials then glaze or paint the finished piece, showing texture, balance and good craftsmanship

Students will work together on a piece of art for the school.
